Assessments and Interventions for Perpetrators of Family and Domestic Violence

This two day workshop is for practitioners who work in the family and domestic violence field. It is designed to help identify the characteristics and behaviours of perpetrators. Worker Safety For Home Visits

The purpose of this one day workshop is provide workers who make home visits to clients with strategies, skills and knowledge to be able to create a positive environment for the achievement of better outcomes for clients through home visiting while concurrently enhancing worker safety at such visits.  The workshop will look at what planning needs to occur prior to the visit to identify potential risks in advance, safety strategies to implement before leaving the office and how to manage the visit to ensure a safe and productive visit.  It will also look at how to deal with unanticipated risks in the home and how to deal with hostile and aggressive clients and other potentially dangerous situations such as where clients are substance affected or experience mental health problems.  The workshop will focus on managing risk from the worker, the client and the agency perspective

By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to

  • Understand what types of situations and issues can pose risk to workers at home visits
  • Assess potential risks in advance of making the home visit
  • Determine what action needs to be taken prior to leaving the office
  • Learn how engage in environmental scanning during visits for the presence of risk

This workshop will review the current system of family law in Australia. It will review the structure of the Family Courts of Australia and Western Australia and the Federal Magistrates’ Court. Working within this system can be complex, and this workshop will review the different roles and responsibilities of family law practitioners, including relating with other professionals, referring to relevant and appropriate agencies, using separate sessions with clients, using support people in family dispute resolution and other processes and establishing appropriate rules for respectful and safe participation in the work.

 

The Skills of Family Dispute Resolution: An Introduction

This one-day session will introduce the specific skills required to work effectively in family dispute resolution. Beginning with the skills required for assessment, including recognising family violence, power differences and the levels of conflict, the session will then move to developing the skills for establishing and maintaining trust, encouraging client self-determination and managing conflict and cultural differences. Participants will be invited to work in small groups and undertake role plays aimed at practicing the skills presented.

Skills in working in mediation and family dispute resolution are extremely useful in a variety of situations including child protection, adolescent work, school counselling and student management, and working with families in crisis. This two-day workshop will provide participants with an understanding of an evidence-based process that assists families to resolve conflicts effectively, efficiently and economically.

The workshop will begin with a discussion about what is conflict before presenting an approach to helping families to resolve disputes. It will invite participants to consider the role of children in the resolution of conflicts and review some approaches to assisting children to manage conflicts between their parents, themselves and others. The workshop will include facilitator presentations, discussions, case studies and role play to develop skills and understanding in a supportive environment.

Working with Victims of Family Domestic Violence

This two day workshop is aimed at helping professionals currently working or desiring to work in the field of Family and Domestic Violence. It will focus on understanding family and domestic violence from a survivor’s perspective, the impact of domestic violence on the family system and the effects it has on children. It focuses on the therapeutic system in particular issues of transference, counter-transference, resistance and collusion. Discussions will also centre on the Family Law Act, Violence Restraining Orders and refuges. .

When working with separating parents to decide on arrangements for their children, it’s imperative that we maintain a strong focus on the children themselves. This is especially important when the children are not present in the discussions.

This workshop considers ways to maintain the focus on the children at all times during the FDR process. It will include skills in identifying possible trauma in children who have experienced a difficult separation, issues of domestic and family violence and their effects on children, possibilities of sexual and other abuse towards children and cross cultural issues. Participants will learn how to undertake a needs assessment interview with family members and ways of focusing on children during the FDR process.

 

Adult Survivors of Child Abuse

This workshop is aimed at helping those who work with adults who have been abused or neglected as children to understand the consequences for their clients that childhood maltreatment has on their functioning as adults. It will also look at what actually constitutes maltreatment of children and how the impact of that continues and changes for the child as they grow into adulthood. It will identify what roles heredity and environment play; the enormity such maltreatment has on the adult survivor and what factors may either ameliorate or exacerbate that impact. The workshop will also look at what interventions assist the adult survivor in the healing process.

 

The Skills of Family Dispute Resolution: Ethical Practice

Ethical practice in FDR involves some specific skills that may not be used in other human service interventions. These include maintaining impartiality and balancing power in an ethical manner.

This workshop will introduce participants to the skills involved in ensuring an impartial approach throughout the work with family members. It includes the development of specific questioning techniques, approaches to balancing power between the disputants, and a consideration of reflexive practice. Participants will engage in small group discussions, case study analysis and role play.

 

Working with Family Domestic Violence

This one-day workshop will present focus on engaging people who use violence. It will consider definitions of violence, discussing the range of violent and non-violent abusive behaviours. Case studies will highlight issues around how violence is used and the effects of violence on family members, including children and parents.

The workshop will then consider specific issues in working with violence, including addressing collusive behaviours, identifying and managing signs of power abuse, addressing the effects of violence on children, and cultural issues in relation to family violence. It will use video material, case studies, role plays and small group discussions.

Case Management with Multi Problem Families

This two day workshop is designed for human service professionals who work with families that present with multiple problems.  The workshop covers the complexities of developing a deep understanding of what is impacting on the family, how to determineexactly what the problems are and engaging with them in finding their own solutions

  • Defining the specific problems to be addressed in conjunction with the family

Working with Male Survivors of Sexual Abuse

A one-day professional development workshop for people working with men who were sexually abused in childhood. PRESENTED BY MIKE LEW Author of the world-renowned “Victims No Longer: The Classic Guide for Men Recovering from Sexual Child Abuse” This workshop is designed for anyone working with (or thinking of working with) male survivors, professionally or in the voluntary sector, including therapists, counsellors, social workers, medical personnel, teachers, police, clergy and students. Mike Lew will present and review knowledge and skills found to be useful when working with male survivors of childhood sexual abuse.

Topics include:

  • A greater understanding of effective (and ineffective) approaches for working with non-offending adult male survivors of sexual child abuse and other trauma.
  • Understanding the difficulties and realities of recovery.
  • Gaining information about specific needs of male survivors.
  • Recognition of issues for professionals who work with male survivors, including stress, burnout, compassion fatigue, and the need for self-care and support.


Mike Lew, M.Ed., a psychotherapist and group therapy leader in the Boston, MA area, is director of The Next Step Counseling and Training Centre. Mike has worked with thousands of men and women in their healing from the effects of childhood sexual abuse, rape, physical violence, emotional abuse and neglect. The development of strategies for recovery from sexual abuse, particularly for men, has been a major focus of his work as a counselor and group leader. He conducts public lectures, workshops for survivors, training and consultation for mental health, medical, human service, clergy, law enforcement, and other professionals throughout the United States, Canada, Europe, Australia,New Zealand and Asia.

This workshop is designed for anyone who cares for or looks after children. This comprehensive workshop has been designed to teach participants the content of the Internationally acclaimed Protective Behaviours Child Safety Program in order to increase their children’s personal safety. There are many ways of talking to children about their personal safety and we do it is so important that we do not scare them or leave them feeling unsafe, afraid or disempowered.

As a safety program Protective Behaviours provides children with strategies to keep themselves safe and cope with situations that threaten their well being, such as bullying child abuse and domestic violence. The program in essence empowers the individual to the right to feel safe and sets out ways in which they can gain the appropriate help when they are not feeling safe.
