Harmony Week celebrates Australia’s diversity and recognises the many benefits we gain from having culturally and linguistically diverse communities.

In WA, Harmony Week runs from 15 to 21 March, celebrating cultural inclusion and a shared sense of belonging for everyone who calls Australia home. At the heart of the week is Harmony Day, observed each year on 21 March, which aligns with the United Nations International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (IDERD).

Harmony Day offers an important moment for reflection: to acknowledge our shared humanity, celebrate the richness of our differences, and build communities grounded in respect.

We also acknowledge that the fight against racism is inseparable from the ongoing struggles for justice for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, and those of the many Indigenous peoples across the world. While Harmony Week celebrates Australia’s rich cultural diversity, it also serves as an important reminder of the need to actively stand against racial discrimination whenever and wherever we see it occur.

A multicultural Australia is a defining part of our national identity. All people who come to Australia bring with them some of their own cultural and religious traditions, while also embracing new traditions formed here. Together, these shared and inherited influences continue to enrich our social fabric and strengthen our sense of community.
