Small Shifts Towards Better Futures
ShiftLab is Anglicare WA’s innovation hub, designing ways for Western Australians to thrive on their own terms.
We start by listening and building trust, guided by local knowledge and lived experience. Together, we test and refine promising ideas, creating impact now and sharing what we learn to influence positive change across services and systems.
Why Innovation Matters
The challenges facing families and communities today are complex and constantly changing. Doing things the same way risks leaving people behind.
Innovation enables Anglicare WA to learn quickly and act with care, moving upstream to support aspirations and strengthen community capability. Through action research, ShiftLab demonstrates what’s possible: practical models that people can shape around their lives, reducing reliance on crisis services over time. We offer scaffolding so local ideas can grow, and share our insights so others can adapt and act in their own contexts.
Our work also provides evidence that informs broader advocacy, ensuring decisions are grounded in what matters most to communities.

Our Approach
ShiftLab creates space for communities to lead change. Supported by philanthropic and grant partners, we listen first, hold space for ideas, and offer tools, resources and support so families and communities can shape solutions that work for them.
- Human-Centred Design - We start in real lives. By listening deeply and working alongside communities, we help turn local aspirations into practical possibilities.
- Learning by Doing - We test and refine ideas in the field, de-risking them through evidence-based assessment of desirability, feasibility, viability, and whether they uphold dignity and fairness.
- Systems Change - We share what we learn and work with partners to create conditions for new approaches to thrive. Our role is to plant seeds for long-term change while demonstrating what’s possible now.
- Horizon Scan - We keep our eyes on the future, reviewing emerging research and consulting experts to identify trends and opportunities that matter most for communities.
