Anglicare WA CEO, Mark Glasson, spoke to The Sunday Times about WA's worsening housing crisis as we enter 2026.

Over the weekend Anglicare WA CEO, Mark Glasson, spoke to The Sunday Times about the worsening housing crisis Perth is facing as we enter the new year.

The plummeting number of houses on the market coupled with the rising cost of living means that Western Australians are finding it harder to keep a roof over their heads.

Comments attributed to Mark Glasson, Anglicare WA CEO:

“From our research, we know the average WA household is paying close to an additional $20,000 extra per year in rent since 2021.”

We need to be concerned that this crisis is now impacting even full-time workers, who are struggling to keep up with the increased costs of housing. While the WA Government has acknowledged the crisis with a massive and welcomed spend on housing, we also need to sustain the community with necessary and sensible solutions while housing becomes available.

What does sensible reform look like?

  • Introducing rent stabilisation measures
  • Ending No Grounds Evictions
  • Introducing minimum standards for renters
  • Setting a target of 6% total housing stock as social housing
  • Establishing a WA Housing Future Fund
