As the Child and Parent Centre turns five at Dudley Park!

Anglicare WA Child and Parent Centre at Dudley Park will turn five this Friday, 29 November.

Special guests Cat in the Hat (aka Mayor Rhys Williams), Thing One (aka Mandurah MLA David Templeman) and Thing Two will give a free book to every child at the event and launch the ‘1000 Books before Kindy’ project.

‘1000 Books before Kindy’ is aimed at improving literacy and connection by encouraging families to read with their babies and small children.

Anglicare WA Regional Manager Metro, Vik Jeyakumar said it’s never too early to start reading to your little ones.

“Reading with your child has such a positive impact as it promotes brain development and imagination, teaches your child about language and emotions, and strengthens your relationship,” said Mr Jeyakumar.

“This new initiative encouraging children to read 1000 Books before Kindy to your child will prepare them for a lifetime of learning and a love of reading.”

Centre Manager Justine Hansen said children attending the party will get a head start towards 1000 books.

“Every child at the party will receive a Dr Seuss book and a personal invitation from the Cat in the Hat and Thing 1 and Thing 2 to join ‘1000 Books before Kindy’,” said Mrs Hansen.

“All families are welcome to participate in the program and each child’s name will be recorded in a log book and put on the 1000 Books Reading tree at the Child and Parent Centre.

“While 1000 books sounds like a lot, it’s as simple as reading one book a day with your child.”

Since opening in 2014, the Centre has supported around 10,000 local families providing early parenting programs, supported playgroups, dad playgroups and the creative STEM based program “The Explorers”.
