Community champions needed for better mental health

Anglicare WA will be hosting a Community Champions workshop where locals can learn how to expand their knowledge and awareness of mental health, alcohol and drug misuse, and how to manage this in a safe and respectful way for themselves and the other person. 

Most of us come across mental health issues among the people we know, love or  work with, but are often unsure how best to respond.

The same is true with people suffering from alcohol and substance use, and frequently this behaviour is connected with poor mental health.

Lara Steel from Anglicare WA said it can be difficult to know how to engage with a person having these issues and what the right approach is.

“We know there are lots of people out there trying to support their friends and family with mental health and substance use issues. We want to support you in this to create stronger communities. 

“Anglicare WA is encouraging members of the public to become ‘Community Champions’ by learning more about these issues, to gain confidence and know they are on the right track in supporting those we care about”   Ms Steel said.

“This free course will help members of the public gain confidence and offers practical skills and ongoing community support networks for stronger communities.”

“It’s designed for people who don’t have a background in this area but who might be confronted with these issues in daily life and want to make a difference.  

“They might have friends or family members in this situation or are first responders in difficult situations at work – such as bar staff, administrators in government offices, shop owners, bus drivers – pretty much anyone who has contact with the public.”
